But in the following decade, the number of Black teachers in the United States dropped drastically. More than 38,000 Black teachers and administrators in 17 southern states lost their jobs due to the closing of all-Black Black students, in particular, were more likely to graduate and enroll in college if they had just one Black teacher by the third grade.
