November 18 is Soka Gakkai foundation day, and this year marks the organization’s 90th anniversary. The Soka Gakkai was founded on November 18, 1930, as a study group for educators. Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, its first president, was an educator inspired by Nichiren Buddhism and passionately dedicated to the reform of Japanese education.

The Soka Gakkai International of the Philippines (SGI Philippines) found its way here as early as 1959. It provided a base for faith, practice, and the study of Nichiren Daishonin’s teachings throughout the land.
